Using WeldMate

Calculator results are study and reference values. Production welding should follow the applicable WPS, code, instructor direction and consumable/equipment manufacturer data.

Pro Tips

Porosity — check first

Base-metal cleanliness, shielding gas flow, wind/drafts, hose leaks, gun angle and excessive stick-out.

Undercut — check first

Travel speed, voltage/current, electrode angle and whether you are pausing at the weld toes.

Fit-up

Measure the root gap, bevel angle and plate thickness before calculating filler volume. Small geometry changes can materially change filler required.

Field rule

Use WeldMate as a quick calculation and study aid. Follow the applicable WPS, code, instructor direction and manufacturer data for production work.

School alignment

LATTC describes welding training in plate welding, SMAW, blueprint reading, applied welding mathematics, welding technical instruction, TIG/MIG, materials/metallurgy and certification preparation. WeldMate uses those published topics to organize this study path; it is not an official LATTC course or substitute for instruction.
